My dad just purchashed a nonrunning Chrysler 1979 45HP model 457H8J. he was told several people worked on this thing with no luck, so he dosen't know what modifications may have been made. After cleaning the carbs and points he was able to start the engine but he had to retard the timimg about 25 degrees past the normal adjustment. He is concerned that the ignition has been modified. We have no documentation so we have nothing to reference to. Any suggestions??

I can only suggest getting a good manual. I like the Seloc. It has what's necessary for you to determine the specs for your engine and how to fix it.

Something might be assembled wrong. Bring number one piston up to TDC and see where the timing mark is. That should give you a good indication if it's mechanical or electrical.

You really need a repair manual because you could have one of 3 different systems.
If the marks are present adjustment is pretty straight forward. You also need to be careful how you check for spark as you could damage some of the systems if you do it wrong.

Hi labbe
Just to confuse you some more. My book shows your motor to be a 1978 model with an alternator and not C.D. ignition. As steelspike notes there were three possible ignit. systems. If your motor still has the magnito point ignit. I would say that to be correct.

Labbe, Sounds like you are in the same boat as I was. it'll be pretty easy with a mqanual. I'm not up on the CD or Magnito type ignition but, If it is the battery ignition, it should be a simple procedure

Just a thought, since a similar thing happened to me. Check the woodruff key onder the flywheel. It drives the cam that opens the points. Could be the problem

If it's the flywheel key as Jcrain suggests, your local Mercury dealer has a replacement. PN is 28-F92498. $6-7 each.
