Timing issues

I have just replaced the stator and timer base assembly. I marked the positions of these parts before I replaced them because I don't have a timing light.I tried to replace them in the exact position.I'm a taking a chance by not trying to retime the engine [1980 Johnson 140 hp.].I have a manual to follow if I have to retime the motor.

I think they are asking if there is danger of damage by attempting to start as is w/o timing first

OK, I don't think it will so far off that it could cause damage.

There is no need or concern to retime the engine. The replacement of parts you've installed would have no effect on the timing.
