Re: timing & fuel filter
Timing rarely ever needs to be reset on an outboard.
I would bet on a fuel starvation problem, could be due to clogged filter, or weak/failing fuel pump diaphram.

Follow the fuel line into the cowling.
It should go past the carbs along the starboard side of the engine, into a screen type fuel filter. You can open it and clean it out.

A fuel pump rebuild kit can be obtained from Mercury for about $12.

There is also a fuel pickup "sock" in the bottom of the fuel tank which can get plugged.

If any of the carbs are running lean or are out of sync, the engine can and probably will overheat the top cylinders and cause the engine to melt down. If they haven't been synced in a few years, it might be worth the time and $ to have them rebuilt and synced.

Last but not least, you may have a coil that is starting to fail, which will show up as a loss of spark when the coil gets hot.
