A friend of mine and I have been talking about trying to hook into some big stripe bass in the river in Saco, ME.

Does anyone know what time of year they're running up there? What is the best bait to use, and where is the best place to fish for them?

Re: Timing for Stripe Bass in Saco, ME

Schoolies are showing up now. the bigger ones should be around in a month or so. I,ve had the best luck with live or chuncked macks. Have heard other people having good luck with surgical tubes and seaworms trolled at night. If your fishing from shore there are some grassy marshes on the saco side you can reach from Ferry Rd.

Good luck

Re: Timing for Stripe Bass in Saco, ME

Thanks bumkin!

I took my Champion bass boat up there yesterday. We put in about 8:30 am - just before the tide started going out. Do the fish follow the tide in and out?

We trolled with tube worms with sea worms on the hook. Caught 7 stripe bass ranging from 15 to 21 inches (where are the big ones?), all in about 10 to 15 feet of water.

I saw the grassy shore where people were fishing. The water at high tide is no more than 5 feet deep there.

There were a couple of people anchored in about 10 feet of water just inside a dropoff that went to 35 feet. They were using chunks of Mackerel and just letting them sink to the bottom. I watched them bring in 4 stripe bass in about 20 minutes.

After fishing for stripe bass, I hope I don't get bored with good ole Largemouth. Those stripers really give you a good fight.

When do the blue fish run?
