I read in a older fourm that GM part # 3992251 would work for my 1989 mercruiser 3.0 L timing cover replacement. anyhelp would be nice. my engine serial number is 0C542094. I looked up part and was only $75.00 and that beats the $220.00 for a mercruiser part

Buy it from GM and you'll be getting an original part, without Mercruiser's mark-up.

If you're old cover rusted through, I'd hit the new cover with a couple coats of Rustoleum.

Re: timing cover replacement

Thank you feeling better now about trying this route. I will paint all exposed bare metal and replace any rusted bolts. Its sure is fun working on our boat. I swore i would never work on cars trucks or toys again. well guess I was wrong. (15yrs later) lol I"m having fun. this forum is a great resource. PS this weekend is the opening day of boating season. and we are doing yard work... Not my idea of fun

Any updates from the Guinea pig? Where did you end up finding the GM part? I just did a quick river test and have a pretty good oil leak up front at cruising speed.

I found this timing cover for $14.00 at Advanced Auto Parts with the oil seal and the cover gasket. It's made in China but it worked great for me. It doesn't have the timing indicator on the side. It also doesn't have the threaded holes on each side were it mounts to the oil pan, but all I did was drill the 2 holes out and used 2 -- 1/4x20 lock nuts. Part # 6092185998 China 11338.

I don't think he was looking for the cheapest junk on the market, he was looking for something as good as OEM, and since OEM is GM (Merc doesn't make timing covers, they buy them from GM) the GM # is what he wanted.

Do you know the advanced auto number? I searched advanced and googled the numbers that you put up and got no hits. Thanks
