I pulled the flywheel to replace the stator. I am also replacing the timing belt to the distributor. The old one was rotten and broke in half when I pulled the flywheel. What is the preferred method to install a new one? I looks like I will have to remove the stator mounting backet. How do I adjust belt tension so that I can slide the new one on? For some reason I am unable to see an adjustment, there has to be one.
1975 model, serial 4117062.
Thanks much

It doesn't have one. You have to take distributor off, insert new belt on flywheel, then re-install distributor.

You'll notice pulley has top part coming off by screw, align distributor mark with timing mark (very accurately) then put pulley cover back on.

Check timing when done.

It's one of these jobs that takes disassembly a lot, but it's very easy.

Yes Mucstack, You have to remove the stator, position in the drive belt, reinstall stator, then pull the belt up and install around drive on flywheel and wiggle it back down into stator, can be tricky to do, Do not force it against drive belt to much or you will damage it. Line up flywheel mark with arrow on distributor and install belt over pulley then install pulley cap. There is no tension adjustment.

Read this below also.

TIMING CHANGE - Mere 1500-1400-1350-1150

Old stuff, but there are still a lot of these motors in the field.

(Attach Service Bulletin Sticker on Pages 3E-45 and 3E-53 of Your Service Manual)
There have been instances of piston detonation and/or scoring on current model 6-cylinder Mercury Outboards. Part of this problem has been attributed to:
a. Lower than recommended octane gasoline and/or
b. Incorrect propeller installation (too high a pitch propeller for the particular application).
When servicing Mere 1500-1400-1350-1150 Outboards for any reason, retard the spark to 21 BTDC. If detonation and/or piston scoring are experienced, retard timing on those specified models in your area so that they are more tolerant to the occasional lower-than-recommended octane gasoline that reaches the marine market. No significant loss of performance will he observed from the 2% spark retard. Merc 1500 and 1150 models above Serial No. 4·23984 will have a spark setting of 21 BTDC from production.
