hello everyone and thanks for looking .so i am about to put my old champion in the water and the current motor needed a few things so i put an old 1976 85hp i had sitting around on the boat, just to get on the water. while installing new drive/ shifter cables i realized the timer base does not move far at all. i have a little video of what it is doing and i am looking for advice before pulling the flywheel. in the past i had an issue of the motor cutting off as i would push the throttle forward. (same motor different boat) my assumption is i can pull the flywheel and clean and lube the base and maybe it will help it or maybe not. if so could someone advise me if i am on the right track and if so what type of lube to use and where to put it. thanks in advance.

To do it properly you'll have to pull the flywheel, stator and then the timer base to clean it up and lube it.

Yep, you are on the right track. It actually was quite common, and yes it will make it stumble or quit when you give it the throttle. Take it apart, clean it and oil it and reassemble. Don't use any grease that is too thick and sticky.

Be sure flywheel and crankshaft tapers are perfectly clean and dry and use a torque wrench to tighten the nut to 100-105 ft pounds (very important).

Omc moly lube on the center bushing and tcw 3 outboard oil on the plastic retainer ring. No grease.

You may also want to pull the spark advance lever off and lube those bushings also.

I think there is also the throttle lever spring that could be gone....
