I have a 1980s 115 in line 6 type III system.
I bought the boat a week ago. It has been setting for at least 4 years.
The motor fired right up in the drive way, idled smooth.

Dropped it in the lake and tried several times to take off but it would bog every time, 1500 rpms. After 4or 5 attempts it took off went around the lake 3 times (small lake) it ran good. Then tried to take off again and the bogging came back. If I played with the throttle I could sometimes get the rpms up a little 1,800 with a miss.

Next I rebuilt the carbs brought it back to the water same deal, adjusted the carbs and then I could get 3,000 rpms with a miss if I tried to push it past 3,000 rpms.

Then my manual finally came in the mail?.Timing and syncing? I?m not having very good success. After my first attempt it seemed to start better but real rough.
Question:
When setting the timing I?m a little confused as to what numbers to use and when.

It says to crank the power head and adjust the idle speed adjustment. Why do I crank the motor? Nothing moves (throttle cam pointer) when I crank the power head. So I just lined up the pointers with the idle screw adjuster. ( this is probly the start of my issues?)

Primary Pickup Synchronizing: it says to crank the power head and adjust the primary pickup until the timing marks lines up with the pointer. WHAT TIMING MARK DO I USE? .464, 4-6* or 20* BTDC specs. In the manual.

Spark Advance: with the throttle arm against the stop (do they mean WOT) adjust the spark advance adjustment screw until the timing mark on the fly wheel lines up with the timing pointer. (Again what timing mark do I use?)

I also checked the electrical components out except a DVA test. They all seemed to check out good.. I had to repair the 2 yellow wires from the stator.(brittle insulation) This does not mean I don?t have an electrical issue.

I know I have thrown a lot out at once but want to give as much info as possible.
Thanks
Jeff

Ok I tried to set timing again and lost spark on #1
So I cleaned up my mess and found this on the floor.
I did blow out under the fly wheel with compressed air.I have no idea were this came from.
Im thinking it may be part of the trigger or stator? 1/4" X 1" long, square on both ends.
It looks like a carbon brush for a dc motor.

You are to cran the motor (have the starter turn the flywheel), with a timing light on #1 spark plug, to set the primary picup timing and then the max timing.

It sounds like you need to study your manual better.

primary being 4-6* and max is the 20* and the .464 is just the set /starrt point.

Since your stator wires were brittle that may indicate a bad stator. Disconnect the 2 yellow wires at the rectifier to see if the problem goes away.

I did a link and sync on mine and the timing was slow when checked running at the lake. I set it at 21?btdc on my 90hp and it was closer to 16? at the lake. You may want to check it-the primary throttle pick up seemed ok though at 3-4?btdc.

There are a couple stickies on this subject in the frequently asked questions part of repair and maintenance.
