I need help timing my motor.

the timing marks are on the harmonic balancer but no numbers other than of course the 0. the manual shows the marks to the right of the 0 are btdc. Is that correct?? I'm on my second new motor in my boat and trying to make sure I dont do this one in. any help is greatly appreciated

You need an advance timing light to properly set the timing, or Mercruiser sells a decal for the balancer with the degrees marked on it.
If you have a carbed engine with the Thunderbolt V ignition, you will have to put the engine into base timing to set the timing and adjust the idle mixture on the carb.

yes I am aware you must put it into base timing. I have that capability. I want to make sure I'm timing in the proper direction. based on the book and my balancer , btdc is to the right on the balancer. I just want to be sure. the book says that if the marks are on the pointer (not the balancer, btdc is in the opposite direction!) that is why I'm trying to be certain. thanks again for any info

Sorry Eric.W to tag onto your thread but my issue involves timing of a Vortec as well

What engine did you get? I purchased a dressed carbed 350 Vortec crate (PN 807447A12) and cant find anything on timing. Where are you getting specs for timing. I looked through a merc manual and all the 5.7's are listed at 8 deg BTDC until around about 2000 at which point some start changing to 10 Deg BTDC (my book only covers till 2002). Im wondering, if my crate motor was made in the last couple of years, is 8 Deg still valid. Nothing at all came with the motor in the way of paperwork.

Im still breaking it in with only 2 hrs on it and 4 times now it has just back-fired out of the blue but then goes back to running fine, so I'd like to double check the timing... although according to the advertising, these Gen+ 350's are setup and tested by Merc.
And like yours, there are no numbers on the tab/pointer. Just a couple of white marks of which I hope one of them is TDC

ok well if that is correct, then I'm timed to 10 degrees atdc. what will would you expect the motor to run like? if its timed atdc would it run smoothly? will it have power and torque? the way I have it set up, it starts, runs and idles smoothly, and has plenty of power(I've been on numerous sea trials with it as well). I need to be certain that i've timed it correctly. may I ask where you got the schematic?

I just went through timing a short block, but in general if you look at which way the engine is turning while cranking and watch the TDC line move into the notches, or the notches move into the TDC mark if they are on the HB. Either way, the notches that it moves into before the TDC 0 position are the BTDC notches.

Mine has a painted line on the 10degree BTDC, so never thought about it. The engine turns clockwise (looking at the HB), the 10 BTDC mark on the HB should be before the TDTC mark, which would be to the right. Might be wrong, but boat is up north, so can't confirm.
