I have a 1976 Mercury 110 9.8HP SN 4391XXX that I am going through. I have a Seloc book that tells how to time it, but the procedure is not very clear. On the Starter Housing it says the timing should be set to .195 341/2 degrees. The procedure in the Seloc tells you to attach a Timing Light and a Tachometer and advance the throttle until the Maximum Timing Mark is aligned with the mark on the starter housing. The set the Maximum Spark Advance screw until it just makes contact. It tells you to check the specs for the recommended RPM.

Questions:
1. Which timing mark should be used? (Solid or Broken line mark?)
2. Is WOT 4500-5500 RPM the running speed that this adjustment should be made?
3. When you do this procedure is the timing set to .195 34 1/5 degrees BTDC? (How do you check this?)
4. Is the other screw for setting the Idle Speed Stop?
4. Anybody have a written procedure for timing this motor?

Why are you messing with the timing, was it messed with??? If the answer is no then leave it alone, if yes I have a PDF at home I will read that might make more sense.

Stay tuned.

I'm going through this motor and fixing everything I can find wrong with it. Right now I have it torn completely torn apart. (except not rebuilding the power head). I am putting a carb kit in it and the book says to time it too when making these adjustments. The motor ran before I started but not real good. Bottom line is I want to check the timing.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

My manual doesn't have it. Do yourself a favour and create an account on John's Old Merc site. Post your question, chances are Dave B knows the answer, he knows all about these old motors.

My stab:
Questions:
1. Which timing mark should be used? (Solid or Broken line mark?) Solid- that's a guess
2. Is WOT 4500-5500 RPM the running speed that this adjustment should be made? yes hence the reason for a tach, you'll need a test tank big enough to hold the water
3. When you do this procedure is the timing set to .195 34 1/5 degrees BTDC? (How do you check this?)- with a dial indicator in the cylinder, bring it up to TDC till .195 reads on the gauge
4. Is the other screw for setting the Idle Speed Stop?- more than likely
4. Anybody have a written procedure for timing this motor?- I looked and couldn't find anything.
