How many folks here save their vacations and take it around the thanksgiving and Christmas holidays? I've always taken mine then because my son was out of school and we could hunt and such. I just looked at my schedule and I'm going to have off 17 days straight starting the week before Christmas. :D We're suppose to go to Texas to do some hunting too....not quite sure yet what days that will be.

Re: Time off for the Holidays

I wish I could but never have anyone that can cover my shift.

I get 10 vacation days a year. Then we have 12 holidays a year that the county recognizes. When the other department employees have to work those holidays they get paid double time. We have to work all of the 12 holidays without extra pay, so they started giving us a paid day off to take sometime throughout the year to make up for the holidays we work. So I get 22 days a year off, but with limited budget and limited manpower I get to take maybe 3 or 4. This last year was the best for me taking vacation days, I took 5.

A few years ago I threatened to talk to a lawyer about labor laws, working 60 to 70 hours a week with no overtime, not allowed to take vacation days then losing them every year. (we lose our vacation days we don't use.) Now I get paid off in June for all my un-used days. It makes a nice check to start the summer. I only get paid for my holidays every other year or so since they can't take them away from us by policy. So no I will only take 1 day during the holiday season, December 16th to celebrate my wifes birthday.

Re: Time off for the Holidays

took off time over Thanksgiving. We get the Friday off before Christmas and the Monday after Christmas off, then We get the Monday off for New Years, so I took off the week between....so I only have to use 3 days vacation but get 11 days total....have to be a fool not to grab that :D

Re: Time off for the Holidays

I always struggle with this one. I work out of the house when I am not traveling. The Holidays are very slow on the phone, e-mail etc., so in some ways it is the best time to work, because I am not really working anyway. Just kinda feels like there is a bungee between me and the phone though, so I usually take the week between Christmas and New Years off. This year I will be off the week after too and will stretch for 16 days.

The other issue is burning up vacation time when the boat is put away . . . :(

Re: Time off for the Holidays

My office closes down over the holidays. We get a couple days paid holiday, but the rest of the time we are required to use our own personal vacation time.

This always irks me. It's my vacation time, I would like to decide when to use it. I would like to take my time off on my schedule, not theirs.

However, I guess I don't have too much to complain about. I have 10 paid holidays, and 4 weeks of paid vacation/sick time.
