Tilting shaft bolt removal ??

On my 87 Evinrude 25 HP, I noticed that the tilting shaft bolt (part 0319756) in the midsection (part that holds on the stern bracket assembly) was rusted very badly and probably could use replacement. The bolt is a carriage bolt with a nut and washer at the end.

I was able to remove the bolt and washer but I cannot seem to remove the carrage bolt. I tried using a punch and a hammer to force the bolt back out the way it went in but no luck... Is there something I am missing here?

thanks

There's a conical washer/bushing on the inside of the transom clamp on the nut side of that bolt. Odds are that the bolt is rusted solid inside that. You could try some deep creep or other stuff to loosen things up. It might work. Otherwise, you'll probably have to remove the head of that long pivot screw and drive it and the washer/bushing out from the head end.

Take it slow, let the rust-breaker fluid do its job, and don't lean on that hammer and punch too hard. A broken clamp bracket will cost you $$$.

May luck be with you!

thanks for the info. I will give that a try, I just wanted to make sure I was not missing anything. I went ahead and cut the head of the bolt, so hopefully I can push it from the head end out.

thanks.

Well, it was difficult to do all of this while the mount was on the engine. So I removed the bolts from the lower plate which caused the two sides of the harness to seperate and then be removed from the rest of the engine.

CA transplant was right. The bolt was frozen inside of the nut and would not budge. I soaked it over night in PB blaster then heated it up with a MAPP torch. Once it started cooling I was able to hit it with a hammer and remove the bolt.

wow aren't you glad all that crap is over!!! :)

Can't wait for September!!! I'm anclote ready!!! Hey BTW I have two VERY LARGE styerfoam cooler boxes (used for shipping vaccinations at our practice) I snagged them before they could throw them away. They probably hold a little more than an extra large cooler each.

Anyhow.. Hey do you know what were doing about food? I vote one person bring a grill and other than that everyman for himself.

What do you say!
