Tilting Question

I'm running an '89 Super Sport, 13', with a 40hp Evinrude. My first season with this boat(or any boat!). She's everything I wanted in a first boat.
My question is, I'm confused about a compromise setting on where to set the tilt. (It's tilt by Armstrong). I have no problem getting on plane(how sweet it is), but, while experimenting at some tilt angles I get a lot of "hopping, slapping" (on calm water) which seems dangerous or at least scary to my passengers. The tilt graphic on the starboard side of the engine has a scale of 0-4. Where do you guys set yours for general cruising and occasional tubing tows?

Re: Tilting Question

You had me going there for a moment, kwikk. "Armstrong", whuzzat? Uh, OH! Now I understand.:$

The hopping you are experiencing is called porpoising. It is caused by the engine trying to lift the bow too high, then it falls back and repeats. That is almost always from too much trim "out".

Bring her in one hole and try her again.

JB: Thanks for the reply. Armstrong usually involves a good shot of elbow grease, or so my Dad told me.
I think , by what you are saying, that I need to trim down a bit experiment expereiment

Re: Tilting Question

Sorry about the last post. Trying to use the spell checker I accidentally sent it on.
Anyhow, I take it I should trim down a little at a time until it feels right. But, what is the purpose of the graphic "gauge" on the motor.
Should I take this question to another forum?

Re: Tilting Question

You might ask about that on the Outboard Non-repair Forum, kwikk. I am not familiar with it.
