Motor: Evinrude 90
Year: 1984
Problem: Tilt sticking in the UP position

I have poured over the net and other post and can't find the answer I need so hear goes. The tilt has stuck twice when the engine was raised higher than I normally do. The first time it did come back down. The 2nd time it did not. We removed the tilt/trim unit while on the lake since I did not know about the manual relief screw and neither did the other 2 guys helping me. We (they) unscrewed a couple of the screws down at the bottom trying to let the pressure out so the tilt valve would go down but obviously that did not work. I have put fluid back in the unit fill hole (with tilt in the down position) and the unit will still pump up, but not go back down, although the pump motor is running. Is there any special priming/purging that I need to do? Is there a valve that is stuck somewhere. I have a suscription to seloconline.com but there are no good details on fixing the tilt/trim pump. Any help will be appreciated.

Welcome Cajun!

First....let's get the reservoir filled the correct way. Raise the engine all the way up. Then check the level. Add fluid if needed till the level is at the bottom of the fill hole. Cycle the engine up and down 3 > 4 times and check level again with the engine all the way up. Repeat the process untill the level is at the bottom of the fill hole when the engine is up. The cycling of the engine up and down bleeds the system of air and makes sure the system is full of fluid.

Hope this fixes the problem. If not...post back.

Thanks!

Thanks for the quick reply! How can I cycle it up and down if it won't come down? But I will raise it all the way up and fill the resevoir. When I raise it all the way up and fill the resevoir, do I need to put the resevoir plug back in or just cycle it up and down with the fill plug (screw)out. I am pretty mechanically inclined but I know NOTHING about hydrolics so forgive me if my questions seem elementary. If it does NOT come down after raising it and filling the resevoir, what do I do then?

Thanks, Tim D.

Not a problem Tim....ask as many question as you need too.....

Always reinstall the reservoir plug. If you don't, when the engine comes back down, the fluid will flow back out the fill hole. With the correct level with the engine all the way up, the level will get well above the fill hole when the engine is all the way down.

EDIT: If it don't come back down, use the manual relief valve. By the by, does the motor change sound when you operate it from down to up and back to down?

Ahhhh!! The manual release valve. You would think that would be fresh on my mind.

The motor does not sould like it has a load when you are trying to let it down (just like it is free spinning without pumping anything, kind of a higher pitch sound). It definitely sounds different when it is actually pumping and when it is not.

OBJ,
One last question. You have been a huge help!! Will be working on this shortly. I could have gotten some water in with the hyd. fluid. However, I did blow some fluid out when I pushed the Tilt pump down. I then filled the resevoir back up (but not while it was in up position like you said, will do that today) with Trim/Tilt fluid I got from Walmart.

1) Do I need to do anything else to try and purge the oil (or any little water that may be in there) and refill with new fluid again?

2) Is is OK to use the Tilt/Trim fluid I got from Walmart or should I be using regular Power Steering fluid?

You guys are da bomb! Raised it up, filled it up and it is working great. I raised and lowered then opened the fill plug. It let just a tiny bit of air pressure out so I did that a couple more times. It seems I can hear a little air in the line but I'm sure that will work it's way out over time. Thanks again for your help.

TD

Great to hear Tim. Did you cycle it up and down a few times and then recheck? This is to purge the air from the system. If you did, after a couple times out, recheck as we discussed above, just as a follow up.
