tilt unit 48 hp??

looking at buying a used tilt unit for that came off a 48 hp evinrude. it looks great and almost new . question is i asked the guy who owns it if in moved in and out freely? he said on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the hardest) that pushes in at a 9-10 and releases out in 3-5 seconds with no effort at all. would this be normal on a good unit? also my unit is a 1990 48 hp Johnson. would a newer model evinrude work (any year)?

Not real sure about the "in/out releases in 3-5secs" thing. If we are talking....the engine is trimmed all the way down, the first few degrees of tilt is trim and is slower than the tilt portion of the up movement. Once past the trim protion, trimming all the way up goes fairly quick.<br /><br />Same way going down....will move fairly quickly going down till it hits the trim end....then it slows up.
