I have a 1988 mercury 60hp outboard. My question is should the fluid for the tilt/trim be at the top of the fill nut? And also how does the system work. I have the main hydralic in the middle of the motor with 2 trim rods exposed on each side. When motor comes down it just pushes the exposed trim rods in? I feel stupid asking, but how do the trim rods work and what purpose do they serve? Are they for the pressure the motor pushes on the boat and just the main hydralic isn't enough by itself. Just guessing.

Also, if I do need to add fluid, what kind should I add? From doing a seach it looks like Autotrans fluid?

Thanks for the replies on all my post. You all are so helpful and give great info. Most of the time if I have a ? I can usually search it out.

Thanks again.

hey jimmy,

im new to the site, but since nobody answered- the pins are your actusl trim-the main cylinder is the tilt.

raise your motor all the way up and fill your resevoir. i was told at the shop trans fluid will work, but when i got done with some repairs and made sure it worked correctly i switched to the regular tilt/trim oil.

Re: tilt/trim ?

Anybody suggest how to go about draining the tilt/trim reservoir. My fluid looks like pepto-bismol. I was hoping to put all new fluid in along with some auto-transmission seal conditioner. My motor leaks down on its own after 15 minutes or so and I'm hoping that might help. '88 Classic fifty
