i just bought a boat with a 93 225 hp johnson motor and the tilt/trim is not working correctly...it has hydrolic fluid...it goes up but wont go back down? i think this would be the tilt/trim motor but before i spend a few hundred dollars just to buy a new one and then put all the time in, im just wondering if anybody can help me?

I'm not sure the specifics on you motor, but is it accessible enough to check and make sure you have power going to the trim motor in both the up and down switch position?

Is their a switch on both the shift lever and near the engine?
If so, does it do the same thing (take motor up but not down)?

If it were me (this is totally up to you), I would reverse the leads from the switch (put up wire on down side of sitch and down wire on upside of switch). Then push the switch to the UP position (motor should go down).
If it does, then the problem isn't in the motor, but the power supply to the motor.

Some of the others on here may be able to give you better advice, though.

Re: tilt/trim

i have not checked to see if there was power going to both but when pushing the down button you can hear a click but nothing else happens...

there is a swith on the throttle and on the motor and both do the same.

i will try to switch everything around to see if the up switch will bring it down...not quite sure how to do that but messing with it hopefully i can figure it out. thanks for the reply.

If both are doing the same thing, it's less likely to be the switch. Before switching any leads, try tracing down the wires to see if the two switchs work independantly from each other.

Re: tilt/trim

There are two relays inside a box on the port side of the engine, one up, one down. Disconnect the battery, then open the box and check the wiring for corrosion, bugs, whatever. Then switch the relays and see what happens.

At the top of the midsection, near the swivel is a tilt limit switch. When the motor is tilted as far as it should, it pushes against the tilt limit switch and cuts the power. The switches stick when the motor is stored tilted up and sometimes when they are not. Track it by blue and white wires in and out.

BTW, both switches control the relays in the same way.

It is rare that the two wire trim motors go one way and not the other on their own, because all you do with the switch and relays is reverse the polarity.

Re: tilt/trim

and do i follow the 2 wires from the tilt trim motor to get to the relay box....i see 1 of the wires goes to hook up to the starter and the other goes to some kind of black box...is that what im looking for?

Re: tilt/trim

The black box is exactly what you are looking for. Open it up and check for corrosion, disconnected wires, etc...

I seriously doubt your motor is shot, so I would not worry yet. If when you switch the relays, and it still does not work, you probably have an internal blockage of a valve or passageway. Do you have a factory OEM manual?

Also dont forget to follow Ezeke's advice about the limit switch, probable that is the issue at hand.

Re: tilt/trim

The black box should not be that hard to reach. See the picture with the one on a V4 circled.

Re: tilt/trim

If you switched them and the problem reversed itself, it stands to reason that the problem was the relay. Go over the wiring and connections though and ensure that it was not a poor connection or faulty wiring.

Re: tilt/trim

I have a 225 Ocean pro also. My trim works but the tilt doesn't The motor is working. How do I check the fluid? I see a screw on the side but can't seem to get it out. Isn't there a screw on the top for filling? The engine is up.
thanks,
biga

Re: tilt/trim

Tilt the motor up and support it with the trail locks.

Look at the unit from the rear.

The T&T motor is on the left and the fluid reservoir is on the right.

The slotted fill plug is facing you from the reservoir. Take it out and fill the reservoir until it begins to flow out of the fill hole.

Replace the plug tightly, tilt the motor up and release the trail lock.

Cycle the motor up and down several times.

Repeat the whole process until the reservoir will accept no more fluid.

BTW, the screw on the side is the manual release. If you turned it, it must be re-torqued to specifications.

While you wait for your service manual to arrive from iboats, you might want to familiarize yourself with the parts diagrams:
