Hi,
I own a 1984 140hp Johnson O/B. The problem I am having is with the power tilt/trim. From the trottle I can get it to go down but not up. At the relay box when I switch the blue and green wires it will go up. I believe that the switch is bad in the trottle. Is that an easy item to replace. And how can I be sure that is what it is. Thank you for any help.

What happens when you swap the relays?

Hi,
Sorry there is only one relay. When I swap the wires the tilt/trim works in the other direction. I believe that it's the switch how do I check this? Thanks

You shold be able to unplug the switch.

Once done, just use an ohmeter to look for an "open" in one of the wires.

The switch is soldered in but when the weather clears I will check the wires with a continuity tester.

I had a similar problem on a twin trim switch, pulled the switch assembly off the controls and found that one of the wires had been cut inside the rubber sheathing that's supposed to protect.
You may want to take a close look there too.

Re: Tilt/trim works in one direction

I replaced the solenoid today but still have the problem. There are three wires coming off the switch. One(red) is the power. Two(blue with white stripe) goes to I or S on the solenoid? And(green with white stripe) gets attached to the green from the tilt trim motor. There is a blue that comes off one of the large terminals on the solenoid that attaches to the blue from the trim motor. If I take the blue striped and attach it directly to the blue trim lead all is fine But that doesn't seem right. Sorry about being long winded but this tell it all. Thanks for any help.
