I have an 84 Mercruiser 228 with an alpha 1 outdrive and the wires for the tilt/trim sensor wires are bare and/or corroded at the outdrive. Is it necessary to pull the outdrive to replace the wiring harness? If so, how complicated of a job is that? I know I can bypass and just use the trailer button but I don't think I'll be able to accept that it will always be broke. If I take it to a shop, how many hours should it take?

Here are the instructions for changing it and readjusing it. You should be pulling the drive at least yearly to check alignmnent, gimbal bearing, bellow, and ujoints.

Trim switch replacement

well it requires the drive and bellhousing removal. might want to buy the gimbal bearing and drive bellows and maybe a shift cable kit while its apart. if you can tell me how many bolts will break I can get closer on an estimate. takes me 3-4 hours to change them if nothing breaks. I did one yesterday, just the bellows, cable and water inlet hose, on an 83 alpha. got all the way to the drive mounting nut torque and before it made 50ftlbs one stud snapped. now I gotta take it back off and weld a washer and a nut to the stud and remove it and try all over again. its sucky cause I had almost 4 hours into it and that what the estimate was for labor. however I do have a corrosion/broken fastener rider on the work order so I will still be on his nickel. you fresh water guys are soooo lucky.
