Tilt/trim switch

I would like to install tilt/trim switch at the bow of my 98 Lund equipped with 115 Johnson. I have identified the wires from the switch on the motor. I located the wires leading from my throttle control to the gauge located on the dash. Can I make the connection there? What gauge wire should I use? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: Tilt/trim switch

You can put a switch anywhere you want. The wire doesn't need to be large, the switch activates a relay that powers the trim motor.

16 awg is fine. Parallel the new wires with the existing wires wherever is convenient. Be sure to maintain the right up down wiring otherwise it will go down when you want it to go up and vice versa. If you have an engine TT switch also, put all 3 sets of wires in parallel. Which ever one is activated will make it happen.

Thanks just wanted to be sure that the wire going to the trim gauge would be acceptable to the switch jump.

Re: Tilt/trim switch

I think I'm reading that you have a trim gauge on the dash or wherever. You don't want new wiring to affect it's operation. On putting multiple switches on your boat for trim control, it has nothing to do with the actual trip position measurement and you can put as many parallel wiring switches on your boat as you choose. As long as you only operate one at a time it makes no difference to anything.

West marine sells one from sea fit thats what I used on my boat and it come with enough wire and the right size. Its a nice sealed box and can be mounted any where.

To be clear you CANNOT splice into the wires to the tilt/trim gauge. You must tie into SWITCH wiring. The tilt/trim control circuit is completley seperate from the til/trim gauge circuit.

I see there is some confusion. I just re-read the original post for the 3rd time and it is clear that Mr. retired wants to wire into his gauge circuit if it's ok.

So Mr. retired, I fully agree with Brian. Run new wires that are in parallel with the wires from your trim switch, not your gauge wiring. Two entirely different circuits.
