Tilt/trim sender units

Greetings, all - <br />Haven't had to write much - all the info I ever needed is already here (almost)! I have a 1986 Four Winns with the Merc 140 and Alpha One drive. Having pulled the two trim/tilt sender units of either side of the gimbal ring, I found them to be loaded with grease - packed up tight. Is this normal? These are the old style units which I would like to upgrade if possible. Also, the outdrive only raises with the trailer switch -could this be a related problem? Thanks in advance for any guidance!
