Ahoy matey's
1989 Force 125Hp
The tilt/trim on this motor is sagging down.
Very Quickly, about 60 seconds from fully up to fully down. It wont even hold the motor down in the water in reverse!!
The dealer i bought the boat off said he would fix it, by "lapping the valves"?
Any idea as to what this is?

And the Second Part.......
How much pressure should the hydraulic system be able to take eg.
Should it sag down under any conditions?
It should be able to handle reverse, right?
How hard is this to fix or is it better/easier to get a reconditioned one?(provided i can find one)
Am i right in thinking that the pump of another motor (similar eg Mercury) will fit?

By the way the electrical side all works, or at least it goes up and down well, it just doesn't stay in either position.

Calm Seas (Lakes)
W'fish

Re: Tilt/Trim Sag

Sorry, i just wanted this to get to the top again.
I know someone out there has had similar problems with their tilt/trim, and i dont want my dealer to rip me off by saying that leaking down is to be expected in all boats to a degree.
All help/advise or even thoughts on the matter are more than welcome!!

W'fish

Have you checked the fluid level? If so is it leaking fluid out anywhere while trying to operate?

Re: Tilt/Trim Sag

Ahoy, Walkingfish. Normal "leakdown" is zero. WOT in reverse shouldn't budge it. The pressures tolerable in that system run into the thousands of pounds. If "lapping the valves" works, whatever the devil that means, go for it. If it doesn't, be a very unhappy customer.

Good luck, and Red Sky....
JB

Re: Tilt/Trim Sag

Thanks guys,
The cylinders are all good, with no visible external leaks. It did stay up by itself once, and i thought it had fixed itself but like i said, it stayed up once
So "lapping the valves" isn't a term that gets thrown around in the boating world, thats intresting, i hope the dealer isn't trying to pull one over on me then!
And i'm happy to know that the motor shouldn't budge,

unless i want it to.

Whats involved in fixing the pump properly, or is it a job best left to a Hydraulic Expert?

Best Wishes,
W'fish

Re: Tilt/Trim Sag

You my want to ck the manual release valve, try opeaning and closeing it a couple of times than make sure its closed tight. If it still crepts down you my want to do a quick test on the main cylinder bring up the motor and block it up remove the top line from the cylinder than remove the block if oil is comeing out (a flow) as it goes down than the orings are bad on that piston. As for the pump its just orings, lip seals and springs.
Good luck

Thanks, Bluefish. That's some stuff I didn't know. I've always been timid around hyraulics the way many people are around electrics. A pinhole leak at 3000psi will drill a hole through you in about 30 milliseconds. Saw it demonstrated on a piece of 4X4

Bluefish,
Good to hear from another "fish"
Thanks for your reply but it now poses me with another question,
Where is the "manual release valve?
I dont believe the trim ram leaks, only the two tilt rams, does this make a difference?
Will it help me track down a possible faulty "hydraulic circuit"?
Do you think someone with a basic mechanical knowledge should pull apart the pump? (i'm no mechanic but i am logical and methodical)

I hope this is
a) not to expensive
b) quick to fix
this is the last bit of my boat that needs attention

Re: Tilt/Trim Sag

Sorry walkingfish, I was away for a couple of days.I'm not familiar with your model but the release should be locate on one side or the other,it will have a slot for a screw driver,it may be located inside your motor mounting and thier will be a access hole,it's there so you can lower your motor if the hydraulic pump fails. It my be what your deal was talking about,(The dealer i bought the boat off said he would fix it, by "lapping the valves"?) never heared of that its just a neddel valve and seat it may need a cleaning. Parts are cheap, and i think you can hande it,remember hydraulic's is pumping oil to drive something or traping it in and area.
Good luck let me know if i can help.
