Howdy,
This may seem like a stupid question, but after recently purchasing my first boat, I'm full of stupid questions. I bought a 1974 MFG tri-hull, that came with a 1972 Johnson 50hp outboard, and a spare evenrude for parts, I think to two engines are identical. My question is can I buy a tilt trim of a junked or newer Johnson motor, what would fit? I've looked at after-market products and would really not like to spend that much money. So would something else work, and where might I find it? Thanks so much for your help, Ross

p.s. the model # is 50ESL 72C, I don't know if that will help or not?

They put out two typs of tilt trim systems for those motors. One has a long thin type pump and the other has a short fat squat type. I know the short fat squat type are available on the second hand market here, but alas there is far less of the older thin type. Alas they are not interchangable. Check out yours and check on the internet sites for second hand parts around you.
You don't say if yours is repairable. I have made repairs to mine without difficulty even after making my own parts!
Ross

Re: Tilt / Trim questions on a 1972 johnson

Thanks guys for your imput, to reply to your questions, RossJ, my motor has no exisiting tilt-trim, the best I can tell is that it never had a power tilt-trim? It is my attempt to add one, now if that's possible I simply don't know? Dhadley, CMC looks incredible, however, after I add on the clamp on adapter, it would cost me about $650.00, which is about 1/2 of what I paid for my boat/motor/trailer, this my be the only way but I sure hope not, any ideas??? Again, thanks for your imput!!!
Sincerely, Ross

OMC did not come out with powertrim until 1973 with the new bolt on stern brackets. The CMC unit will work.

Ratts!!!!!!! I was afraid of that. I guess I'm S.O.L. unless I buy the CMC. Does anyone have an oppinion on the Minn Kota Power Up moter tilt? It's a bit cheaper than the CMC, I was wondering if it would still work O.K. Seahorse, thanks for your help!! Looks like I'll be spending some big $$$$.
Thanks again, Ross, aka Captain of the S.S. Money Pit.

Don't buy the Minn Kota unless you see one operate with a motor bolted on.

Good luck!

Does anyone think that trim tabs would be a better idea than buying a add-on tilt / trim? I'm not sure on the price differance, but I'm still in college, and the price means everything. Secondly, is it possible to build your own tilt/trim or trim tabs, has anyone been poor enough to try?
Thanks, as always, Ross

Trim tabs and motor trim do different things. Simply put, the motor trim tries to bring the bow up and tabs try to bring the bow down. There's more to it but that's a start.

Good luck!

Re: Tilt / Trim questions on a 1972 johnson

I was looking at my motor today, and noticed that basically the motor piviots/rotates on the transom mount, basically. Is it possible to swap out the entire mount with a mount that has the tilt/trim incorporated into it. It would seem like a pretty simple process, however it there any mount of another motor that would fit mine?? I know I kicking a dead horse, but before I spend $600 plus dollars, I want to think that I tried everything else. Thanks guys, Ross
