Hi all, great site and thanks in advance for your assitiance. My Johnrude 115/1982 developed a leak in the T&T. It lost allot of oil but luckily it was simply the hard metal hose at the bottom of the T&T had come loose. We tightened it up, added oil to the unit and worked it up and down many times before closing it up. Shortly after it started malfunctioning. It would not trim up under any load, it got worse to where it would not stay up when trimmed up. Affter a few trips it is to where it will not even trim up on a consistant basis. Occasionaly it seems like it will work just fine but not for long. The oil has been checked and re-checked. My question is, is it possible that the unit lost prime in the pump chamber? Would removing the pump and filling that reservior help. If the unit should be working if it is full of oil then I assume there is blow by in the cylanders. Any information on what could be the problem and how to fix it is greatly appreciated. Thanks

You said you filled it up with fluid, worked it up and down and THEN closed it up. You probably have air in the system and need to purge it. Make sure
the oil level is full and cycle it up and down 4-5 times to get rid of the air. The system usually
bleeds itself if everything else is ok.

Dutch

Re: TILT & TRIM QUESTION

Thanks for the responses, it has been worked up and down probably 20-30 times since the leakwas fixed. Now it really wont cycle up or down, the motor is going strong the best I can tell. Perhaps I will open the releif valve to get it up then try to cycle it down and try to get any air that might be in there out. Is it possible there is a valve or bad O ring causing this problem?

Re: TILT & TRIM QUESTION

Walkabout.... The engine must be in the full tilt position when the reservoir is filled, then replace the fill screw and run the engine up and down three or four time to purge the air. The unit is self priming/purging.

However, there are times that a air lock will work its way into those units, and if so, the unit simply will not move. The following is what I have found to be the cure......

With the filler screw removed, cover the hole with a rag, then stick the air nozzle of a pressurized air hose in there to force the oil to flow through the various passages. BUT DO NOT use high air pressure. I've found that 10 or 12 pounds is enough to do the job.

Let us know how you make out.

Re: TILT & TRIM QUESTION

Thanks Jo, a darn good idea. I figure it must be a air pocket, it really wont cycle at all right now. I will post up the results. These things usuall just prime right up once they get juice in them?
