Re: tilt/trim problem

does she tilt up and down ok? If she tilts up and down ok then it most likely isnt a leak, but if you can tilt her up and she will ease back down, then you have a leak. Tilt her all the way up, open the fill and vent on the pump, and refill the resivoir. Once you have refilled the resivoir, recap it. put the vent screw back in, screw her down flush then back her off 1.5 turns. Then let the motor down and operatet the pump to trim her up. Repeat until resivoir is full. You could just be low on fluid causing this condition. Just make sure your vent cap on the resivoir is not closed as it can cause a vapor condition in the power tilt trim unit.

Re: tilt/trim problem

Benja, I have a 1977 Merc with T/T. It has a knurled knob on the valve body under the trim pump. This knob may be turned to allow manual (hand) tilting, when necessary. I recommend that you check to see if it is in the normal position. The pump had instructions on which way (CW or CCW) to turn the knob for normal operation. If this does not cure it, it may be the teflon seals in the trim cylinders. Repair kits are available ($40 each plus labor), or you can look for used cylinders to replace them. It is likely only one is bad, and you will need to isolate it.
