Tilt/trim problem on classic fifty mercury

I have a mercury classic fifty motor and my problem is that over the past summer I noticed that the power and speed at which my tilt trim would go up or down was getting worse and worse. Now, the tilt trim just makes a clicking sound at the solenoids if you push the switch up or down. We have tested all battery connections, the solenoids, and the tilt trim switch, and all are ok. This leads me to believe the tilt trim motor is bad or has a loose wire inside of it. It has an Eaton square trim motor. My first question is: Do you think the trim motor is the problem? Second, Where can I get one of these motors if it is indeed the problem? Any help would be appreciated!!

Welcome to iboats.

I think finding parts anyplace but thru a Merc dealer would be next to impossible. You can get replacement units from aftermarket suppliers, but probably only complete units.

I'd bet the brushes are rusted, or rather the brush holders. Moisture invades and things start rusting up. The motors are fairly well sealed, but if yours was ever submerged or is mounted in a perpetually damp area, then all bets are off. You might try disassembling it. It might just need cleaning and drying out. You probably have nothing to lose.

That is what I am going to try to do. It sure is hard to get the trim motor off!! Have to move one motor mount over then get to the trim motor. Not a very good design to work on!
