Need to remove my tilt trim for repair but the pin the connects the t/t to the motor is stuck due to previous owner not doing maintenance. Would heating it help?

Thanks guys

Re: tilt trim pin stuck HELP!

You're definatley not the first, nor the last with this issue. Those that have been in your boat feel your pain (myself included).

You will need a quality penetrating oil, BFH (Big F*&$ing Hammer), punch/drift, and possibly a torch.

First, be sure that the end of the pin that you are trying to drive through is not "mushroomed" at all. IF it is, no way she's going through. Take a file to her to get her back to round. Soak it well, again, quality penetrating oil, smack away. This has taken me 2 or 3 days in some bad cases, moving it centimeters at a time. Once it gets going, it usually gets much easier. Soak, whack, soak, whack, etc.... Heating the body, expanding it, helps the pin through as well, but be careful around hoses, rubber seals, etc...

BTW, what is the issue with your TNT unit?

Re: tilt trim pin stuck HELP!

the pressure of the motor dropping down(manualy) it wants to force the fluid out of the screw under the pump. The valve in there seems to be fine. I've tried releasing the pressure on the back valve with a punch and it made the fluid come out from the back but still leaking at the front when pressured. Does this make sence?

Re: tilt trim pin stuck HELP!

By "back valve", are you referring to the manual release? Im not quite sure where your leak is from the description you provided.

Could you click on the link below, follow the prompts to your particular outboard, then give the the numbers for the areas that you are referring to.

www.shop.evinrude.com

1. First click on the blue highlighted, "View Parts Catalogue"

2. Top left corner, change the drop down to "Johnson, then GO"

3, Click "1979", "115", " 115TL79R"

4. "POWER TILT AND TRIM"

Re: tilt trim pin stuck HELP!

It is likely just the o ring. I would change that first. They come in a kit, so you can change all of the valve seats.

Tried changing the o-ring. This all started when the tilt stopped working properly. It would go up but not down. Someone told me that it could be the pressure behinh the back valve seat. they said to take the pin thing with the springs out and find a punch to fit the back valve and tap with a hammer to release the back pressure. Now all it wants to do is leak(only when under pressure) out of the valve seat.

So was the electric trim motor trying to run while the "DOWN" button was pushed, yet just not moving? Now you hit it with a punch and she leaks?

Re: tilt trim pin stuck HELP!

The motor runs fine when I push the trim switch but it now does not move anything now cause when i fill it up and start to bleed the system, it leaks out of the valve seat when I try to manualy move the motor down.

This is what I tried-
"I had the same problem with my 88. follow these instructions provided to me by joe reeves.Raise motor to the top.Suport motor with a block or flip down the motor support.
Looking at the back of the motor you will see a 1 inch round cap with a screw driver slot lower left below the pump motor.Remove that and you will see a plunger and a spring.Remove them.On the back of the cap that you removed(this is really a valve)you will see a hole in it.Find a punch to fit in the hole. Now look in where you removed the cap and you will see a hole in a valve that is the same size.Place the punch in that hole and give it a couple of raps with a hammer.Becareful there is a lot of pressure behind that valve and oil will squirt out.You should see the motor come down once you relieve that pressure.Reassemble and fill res with oil.Worked for me"

Now it leaks from the 1 inch screw cap(the valve seat)
