I have a 1974 135Hp Evinrude\johnson Model# 135ESL74B Serial# J4000579. The tilt & trim motor went out...The OMC # for the part is 172655 - I took it to a marina and they sent it back saying that they couldn't find parts. That there was electricity going to the motor but none coming out. I tore it apart and found a bad connector. Then I broke an old O ring, and looked for a replacement for a while. Now I don't remember how the 3 wiring connectors were connected. Red, Blue and Black going in. The bottom of the unit just has 3 black connectors. Can anybody help?

Lost Aboard
Skylor2001

I am not experienced at this. This is my first boat. I haven't even had it in the water that much.

Skylor,
I am assuming your unit is an external PT/T since you said you have red, blue and black wires.
Starting at the side of the motor that has the ground wire coming out at the bottom, the blue wire hooks up first, then the black wire, then the red wire.
The ground wire I mentioned is the ground wire which hooks to the trim cylinder.
Hope this helps!

Re: Tilt & Trim Motor connectors

I'm not sure what you mean when you say the ground coming out of the bottom. There are 3 wires coming through to the bottom of the cap on the hydrolic motor cylinder top. Then there are 3 black wires coming up from the middle of the cylinder, on top of the hydraulic fluid reservoir, with connectors on them to connect to the top 3 connection points. I just know that the 3 wires going in from the very top cap are Red, Blue, and Black from splicing in to look. The rest are just plain black wires but I have followed them through from the top to see which colors are to which connectors. There is one connector that looked like it had no wire following through. Would this be the ground connector? The Blue and Red each led to a connector. How do I know where to connect the 3 black wires coming up from the middle cylinder to the top connection points? I know this is hard to understand... Thanks for responding Raybo37! - You sure make it sound simple!

Skylor A picture will help immensely.I looked at what your Johnson should have, and am somewhat puzzled.I see a hydraulic/motor combo, with the motor mounted on top of the hydraulic resevoir/pump.the only wires are coming out at the very top of the whole unit.

As I remember there are only three wires red green and blue. The grounding is thru the metal of the unit.

If you want to Email me,I can pull the original manual and try to figure this out at work.Just include your model number to remind me.

I'm at dhpmarine@aol.com
DHP

Re: Tilt & Trim Motor connectors

Thank you so much DHPMARINE!
I'll do that and tomorrow I will take some pictures and see if I can doctor them up well enough that you can tell what it is. I just have a cheap little computer camera with no flash but who knows....if I can enlarge it enough with out distorting the picture to much ... maybe it will work. Worth a try. It would help immensely like you said. I'll try my best.

Still Lost Aboard
Skylor

Skylor,
I hope you two can get it worked out. My manual layout on your unit was limited, to say the least. Good Luck!
