Tilt/trim - adding fluid?

After reading some of the posts here on how to add fluid to the tilt/trim system, I went out today to try and ran into a problem right away. If I understand the procedure correctly, I'm supposed to raise the engine all the way up and "lock" it in the up position so it can't move back down, and then release the pressure by trying to lower the engine.

On my boat, with a yammy engine, there is a clip you can move to lock the engine in the up position. Did that but, I'm concerned pushing the button to lower the engine is going to try and force the engine down breaking the pin that connects the engine to the lifting system.

I guess the question is, when I press the tilt down button does the hydraulic fluid try to force the engine back down or does gravity allow the engine to come back down?

Sorry for the long post. Thanks in advance for your help.

It does produce down force. Run it all the way up and place the tilt lock in place, but leave it tilted all the way up. The tilt lock will keep it from dropping down where it cold hurt you, which would be pretty unusual anyhow (just as a safety measure). You don't need to run it down to rest on the lock. Then fill the reservior.

Then you may want to run it up and down through its full range a few times to purge any air then recheck..:)
