Tilt Trailer will not re-latch

These forums have been extremely informative. I am a newbie to boating. I searched for hours here but do not see a similar posting. Purchased a 15ft. 1962 Starcraft on a 1970 Spartan Tilt trailer. Trailer was missing VIN, had to go through quite the process to get one assigned to register the trailer in NYS. Found a forum on how to off-load the boat onto tires to take trailer to get inspected. Worked great getting off and then back on today. The problem I am having is that I used the tilt on the trailer to reload the boat and it will not "click" down onto the latch. It is almost like there is not enough weight on the bow of the boat to snap the tilt back into position. I tried rocking the boat, tried sitting on the closed bow. Nothing seems to work. The tilt worked fine without the boat on it as I was experimenting on how the heck it was supposed to work. Any suggestions? I can't get to the marina for almost two weeks - will it be dangerous to tow the boat like this? I appreciate any suggestions or help.

Re: Tilt Trailer will not re-latch

If the tongue is not square with the axle you will have problems. Sometimes the axle is tilted slightly from a slope on the ground.... sometimes the tow vehicle is tilted. I have a tilt trailer that acts the same way for my ATV. I had a tilt trailer for a tri-hull and just bolted the tilt and decided not to use it.

Get the boat and tow vehicle onto level ground and try it. If all else fails use a pair of C clamps and clamp it down for towing. For safety reasons I drilled a hole in the ATV trailer tongue and put a hitch pin in.

Re: Tilt Trailer will not re-latch

Welcome to iboats. I have owned a couple of tilt trailers, and never used the tilt feature. I would check to make sure the spring and pin mechanism are well lubricated. If you can't get it latched properly before taking off, I would make sure it is secured externally, maybe a ratchet strap device pulled tightly around the outside.

Once you get it latched properly after dumping the boat, I would seriously consider leaving it latched or even weld it if it seems like it wants to come undone.

Thanks tons for the feedback. I will try your suggestions. I may also try to offload and reload without the tilt this weekend. I probably will lock it up for good to avoid the hassle in the future.
