it allows you to launch the boat in shallow water were you might not be able roll it on and off the trailer otherwise

be carefull when they hit a balance point they tilt pretty fast

tommays

There was a recent post about getting the boat off and back on the trailer while on land - so that the trailer can be maintained.

A break-back trailer like this one, plus a few old tires, makes that job a lot easier.

Release the lever when launching or retrieving but not when towing. There should be a chain to adjust tilt range, use it so the trailer frame doesn't bottom out on the ground. Like shown on the previous pic, you don't have to get the axles wet...back down to the edge until just the tires are wet but nothing else. Tilt trailers let you launch and retrieve in places that float-ons can't.

Interesting. How do you retrieve with this thing? I assume it is done under power?

Amir

Re: tilt trailer what dose it do?

I thought I was the only one around with a spartan trailer ;) . I've found with mine that it doesn't help loading (maybe unloading), but I use it to help with draining the boat after washing. I leave the winch connected, unhook the latch and winch/tilt the boat up so that it can completely drain. I then run the winch in to pull the boat back into place and rehook the latch.

So dose it make it easyer when loading? Is it just for unloading. I thought it would slam down when loading. I have never used it before but i have trubble loading. The boat landing is pretty bad. IT is hard to get the trailer level. Thanks For The Feed Back.

It makes loading easier when in shallow water or from dry land. Let the tilt down to the ground and winch the boat up. Winch until the boat is almost ready for the bow to fall. Stop winching and pull the bow down by hand. No slamming this way.

When loading you may have to get someone to help hold the trailer tilted up until the boat is partially on it, otherwise the weight of the trailer favors it falling and relatching over staying tilted.

This type of trailer is designed for getting the boat back on particularly when the ramp is steep as it reduces the force required to winch it back on. It is also useful for all the other situations described. Just be very careful as the trailer can snap back into position quickly for the untrained!

BTW, here's a picture of my Spartan trailer. I've completely redone it with LED lights, strap winch, 13" tires, 4 bunks and all new rollers including a Bell bow roller and four 12" rollers of which the front 2 are self-centering ones.

Nicely done, phantoms!
I, like Rodc, hotrod261 and jtexas had some questions of this "tilt trailer" feature at first. In fact, I had no idea what tilt-trailer is, until a couple days ago, when someone(s) at the other forum pointed that out, by looking at the pic I sent.

But now, after reading the posts above, as well as the similar tread linked by jtexas above, I have a much better concept of it. Thanks guys!

By the way phantoms, looks like you have the STOLZ rollers installed, didn't you? Did you leave the boat at the dock while you're working on the trailer? This is going to be my future project. Seems like it's always something with our hobby isn't it?

:)

Re: tilt trailer what dose it do?

Actually, I did it all with the Boat on the trailer. Changed Rollers one at a time, added outer bunks and then removed original turned-on-side bunks. Then added inner bunks. My boat weighs a little over 1200lbs with the motor and when you break that down to each individual component, it's not that much. The reason only the front two 12" rollers are self-centering, is because the V makes way to a rounded pad on my boat and self centering rollers for the back two would be useless. The trailer still sits higher than I like, but I launch at a steep ramp and it works out. I looked into a drop axle, but can't find one in the spring widths I need.

Re: tilt trailer what dose it do?

I have a tilt trailer as well.
I have never used it. The guy I got the boat from told me how he wrecked the skeg on the his O/B.
He said the pin came un-done while he was driving up from the ramp(with the boat on it) and the skeg was squished and he had to replace it.
So he put a lock on the pin and threw away the key, that way it would not happen again.
Now that I have read this thread, I might just try it this summer.
But this just adds to "another thing to remember" when boating. That is how I see it.
But I am going to try it and see if I like it or not.
B.C.

Re: tilt trailer what dose it do?

brother chris,
My tilt trailer was also disabled by the previous owner who bought it from Medford, Oregon. There's someone from Seattle who mentioned that he had an tilt trailer too, in fact his trailer make is the same as mine: SHORELINE.

Wonder, why quite a few trailers from this general area have this tilt trailer feature on them? Could that be that the area has a lot of rivers (with no man made paved ram) to launch the boat from?
