Tilt stuck on Yamaha

Probably not a huge problem but beyond my current knowledge. I have a 2003 Yamaha 225 which is stuck in the up position. My knowledge of the engine and location of components is limited - I haven't had time to learn it as I'd like to.

It started yesterday (worked fine last Sun.). I had left it down after rinsing out. Wanted to angle it up a bit so as not to let oil seep into the chambers. Wouldn't go up. No pump sound. (was controlling from the throttles at helm). So, I hit the down. Went the couple of degrees down just fine. Then I hit the up. WOrked fine. About halfway through, I thought I'd double check because of the problem before - wouldn't go up but would go down. This time, it would not go back down, no pump sound but I did get a clicking from inside the engine housing. So, I went to the tilt switch on the engine side, to eliminate the other switch and associated wiring. Same problem, no sound other than a (relay?) click for down, but the pump runs to lift. The engine is all the way up now.

Any ideas? Almost sounds electrical as in a relay, switch, or possibly a solenoid. Though I don't know the engine, as mentioned, my guess is they have a pump with solenoid operated valves to run the fluid into either end of a lift piston. I'd appreciate any insights as well as locations of the parts I have to look at. I really do need to buy a service manual for it. That I've had the boat a year and don't know it better is probably shameful.

The initial failure to go up but would go down, and now the reverse is true should be suggestive, but ......

Thanks in advance,

Re: Tilt stuck on Yamaha

post the full model number

Sorry for the delay: I've been out of town, kept running. ANyway, it's either an F225B or an LF225B. Those are from the manual cover - I haven't been able to get out to the boat and motor for any more extensive numbers which may have been on it. It's a 2003 model year with about 550 hrs.

As mentioned, at first it did not go up, I put it back down the few degrees it had been up (basically trimmed up), which worked, then the up worked but not the down. Of course, I've checked the support. But, the down motor command makes no noise. Even if you could point to the location of relays to check. The fun part will be that the boat is on a lift so I have to sort of hang over the engine while doing this while avoiding going head first into the canal. I'll keep a mask and snorkel handy.

Thanks,
