tilt problems

I have an 87 merc 90 horse and the other day while fishing i trimmed the motor back down and it just stopped. I am able to trim it up then back down till it shifts to the slower speed then shortly after it just stops while the pump continues to run. I trimmed it up and filled it with fluid but it still catches. I am able to release the pressure screw and the motor falls manualy so its not catching on anything. Any ideas?

I also remember that day i was fishing that i got close to a buoy and my motor bottomed out on what sounded like concrete it did jar the motor a little but since i was going so slow (1-2mph) i didnt think anything of it. What did I do?
