Electrical problem -Tilt/Trim and more....
Evinrude 85hp 1977, 4cyl -- I was letting my motor up with the power tilt/trim and stopped for a moment to look at the motor and when I tried letting it down the swith would not work in any direction. Notice that some of the wires going to the solenoid were worned, cracked and also looked like part of the electrical connector was bad. Where can I get a wiring diagram for this engine(battery,trim/tilt switch, solenoid sec.), also how can I check the solenoid to see if its working and trim swith button, or is there a way to check the trim/tile mechanisim by bybassing the solenoid?

Also, if this is an electrical problem, could it also contribute to the engine overheating, or stalling when put into gear or throttle increased? Carbs were repaired but was told that they were the wrong ones for this model.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Re: Tilt-n-trim problem

You can find the wiring diagrams and test procedures in the appropriate service manual for your engine. You should be able to download it online. And I hate to say it but your "other problems" are just that, other problems. The overheating will most likely be thermostat or water pump problems and stalling can be carbs, fuel delivery, timing, or a list of other causes, but again, a service manual will have symptom, diagnostic, and repair charts that will help you find the cause and fix it...

Re: Tilt-n-trim problem

Thanks for the info. This might be a project that's more involved and more money than I'm willing to put into the boat, 1977 Ebbtide, supertracker, tri-hull. Bought it "as is" and was told by 2 marine techs. that more money was needed to get it to work. That was before the Tilt-n-Trim problem. I was hoping that I could make it a side project and do it myself, (to save on labor cost), but will try to aleast get the Trim to work. Thanks again for the info.

Re: Tilt-n-trim problem

There is no fuse. previously owner must have redone wiring. was able to run jumper cables to the 3 wires comming from the trim and was able to move it up and down; now I need to figure out the wiring from the solenoid and trim switch section.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Tilt-n-trim problem

How many trim switches do you have on the boat/motor? Check them all to see if any work. Check the switch you are using to make sure it is ok. I have had them corrode and quite working properly. Had to replace. Hope it's as simple as this. Don't think your other problems would be related to the trim issue.
