Hello
I have an arco marine 2wire tilt and trim unit which I’ve found to have a loose green wire coming out of the top of the pump housing. My question is; can I take off the housing to motor assembly to diagnose without draining the fluid?? Finally found issue which was on/off from time to time. Had a few times when the thing wouldn’t do anything then one day happened to wiggle the green directly outside of the motor and it suddenly worked, leading me to believe that there must be corrosion, breaking wire or both.

Sorry I don't know your unit! But if nobody else knows you just have to go for it.... Then you'll be the guy that knows :)

Ok so I decided to go ahead and pull the two bolts on top of housing (2-wire system by arco) then gently pull off housing cap with a twisting motion. Be careful as the two motor brushes are spring loaded and the springs will wanna become airborne. There’s an o-ring encasing the circumference of the housing which was brittle so probably where moisture was getting in as when I pulled the first housing bolt it showed rust and corrosion. However, one of the brushes just broke apart to the touch so I’m convinced this was actually the issue because voltage test revealed proper juice to both green and blue wires and ground. Anyways, decided to shop for new brushes but would not hesitate to look into entire housing assembly if I can find one at a reasonable price. Will update. Cheers

Thanks Jerry but I think I’m going to need to replace entire electrical unit as it is in pretty bad shape; lots of corrosion and rust on components. No point in just replacing brushes if there’s nothing but rust to solder them to-If I go to remove old motor from the pump is there a tutorial I can dig into anywhere? As far as draining hydraulic fluid etc. Arco 6276 replacement kit coming…cheers!

Update-decided to keep old unit and just to give it a good cleaning with some electronics cleaner and a small wire brush to get those stubborn rust/corrosion spots off. After further evaluation and curiosity (just to see if it’s possible)I decided to replace the brushes but…I thought since I had an old starter laying around, it’s brushes could potentially be used for the tilt/trim motor since it’s basically the same set up. I took the starter brushes and filed them to match the same dimensions as the ones on the trim motor, soldered them on and after a $!@$& of a time trying to realign and re assemble I hit paydirt as the thing works better and smoother than ever before. The trick to the assembly is to rig up a tool ( I used an old kitchen fork and broke off the middle two prongs)which will hold the two brushes apart as you slide the wire assembly cap thing down onto the motor shaft. I wanna also mention to keep a close eye on 4 plastic washers ( 2on bottom and two on top) on both ends of the shaft as well as a shaft pin on the bottom of the motor shaft which activates the pump. Maybe this will help someone out maybe not-worked though
