You didn't say what year or model you have, but - if it's an old one, they often fail. I just use a 2X4 between the bracket and drive cover and wrap it about the engine with a bungee cord. You don't have to worry about the 2X4 breaking during trailering.

the motor is a 1967,,trailering is not the problem,,its needs to be tilted when in the water to keep prop off the rocks when im fishing,,,,dont know if there is a tilt lock or not
