Tilt guage quit working for some reason. The tilt switch operates the motor but the guage does not move. Use to work. How does this work? What should I look for.

Re: Tilt Guage

The trim gauge and sending unit work just like the fuel gauge. The sending unit is a veriable resistor and the gauge is a volt meter. You can connect your DC volt meter to terminals "S" & "G" on the back of the gauge and manually move the arm on the sending unit. If the voltage changes, the gauge is broke. If it doesn't move, it's either the sending unit or you've got a wiring problem.

c/6
Hooty

Re: Tilt Guage

Thanks for the info Hooty. Now, where can I find the tilt/trim sending unit. I know it's back there on the motor somewhere. I notice last year it did not seem to be acurate but now it has quit all together.

Re: Tilt Guage

Tilt the motor all the way up and look on the inside of the transom bracket for a lever on the port side. Once you find it, disconnect the 2 wires going to it and use a multimeter on the Ohm setting and connect the leads to the wires. Move the sender arm and see if the resistence changes. If so, you sender is working and it's either the wiring or the gauge. Pretty much what Hooty said...

BTW- you should read between 1-88 ohms when you move the sender.

Don't know what year or size motor you have but my 1974 Johnson 70hp dosn't have a arm on it, the sending wire run inside the port cyl at the top, mine quit working to and can't figure it out the gauge seems to be ok but how would i check the sender inside the lift cyl????

Looks to be an 1989 Model, so I assume it would have the plastic arm. Never know...
