Have a 1973 OMC 225 I/O. Have replaced solinoids and tilt motor. Titl Switch is good, had it tested and when I check other electrical items like lights, radio, blowers run so it makes me think my fuses are okay. solinoids click, I can hear motor. I think I have exhausted everthing but the worm drive otilt gear. Any thoughts?

Did your tilt work before? If yes, when did it stop?

What kind of shape is your hammer coupling and your worm gear shaft in? If those are good, I'd look at the clutch pack - but be careful tearing into that mug. Make sure you have the right tools and a good manual.

Have not got into the hammer coupling or the worm gear shaft yet. The tilt worked up until two weeks ago. Probably take cover off the clutch assembly to see if it has water or condition of the clutch pack. Have a good manual but don't look forward into tacking the clutch

Took the Crestliner to the boat mechanic in our town. The removed the clutch and said it was gunked up, they cleaned it and put it back in, now the tilt works. Took the boat to our local lake and it would only work in reverse, forward drive would not work? What could the problem be now?

You could have broken the forward engaging spring???(there is probably a proper name for it) It is a spring that tightens against a cone to engage the gear. There is a little nib at the end of it that will break off if momentary continuity is lost. If that occurs, the spring tightens, then realeases then tightens again, under load, and snaps.

I had this happen several times in my '75 Gulfstream. They could never find the cause. In 1979 I replaced the drive with the newer hydra-mechanical drive and have been good to go til this very day.

That and make sure the mechanic didn't monkey around with your shift cable connectors - I think you're still electric shift on a '73. I just had that happen recently too.

Yup, he's electric shift. Check the 2 knife connections on the shift wires where they come out of the drive to the inside of the boat. Make sure they are both clean and properly connected. If the connections are clean and tight, and the boat out of the water, run the engine just at idle and try puting the drive into forward. Does the prop turn at all? If yes, try it again with the prop in a barrell or with the boat in the water. Does it still turn or try to? If it will try to turn when dry but not in the water then Admiral B has the answer.

I had this happen in my 77, and Boomyal is right if you are getting 12 volts to the green wire but your prop is not spinning, good chance that spring broke. I am in the process of replacing the spring in 1 of my lowers.

Boomyal - can you please give me more info on this swap you did ? are you saying that you swapped a mechanical 800 for your old elec shift ?

how much modding was involved?

I have always wondered if us electric shift guys have any other options. Please more info.
