couple of questions.
My Tilt and trim when i open the boat up goes all the way down. and every now and then i have to hit the reset switch to make it come up. I had thought the tilt and trim went out earlier this year and drained all the fluid out of it hoping to get the engine up to bring the boat home but a buddy showed me the reset switch. I refilled the cylinder with hydraulic jack oil by removing the little plug and filling it as much as it could hold .Last year i could raise the engine up while running at full speed to make the boat sorta hop in the water . this year it just wont do it. is there a special way to tell if i have enough fluid in it? It will raise up when i goto put the boat on the trailer . like i said though every now and then i hit the reset switch but it seems to work fine until I get moving.

Re: tilt and trim

Many different systems out there.
Make, model, and year of motor would help.

Tell me more about this reset switch please.

its a force 150 a 93 i think it is. and the switch is in the cowl right hand side facing it. sorta like a circuit breaker when it pops out you push it in and it works again

Re: tilt and trim

does it raise and bleed down or just pretty much not raise at all? 1993 150HP has two known issues.

Issue #1 is that mercury used a low end ATF for fluid that mpregnates the rubber under high pressures and causes it to crumble. The most common point of failure is the trim piston ring. when this seal splits the fluid leaks past alsmost as fast as the pump can go. The system will either just not move or barely moves and then drops like a rock.

Issue #2 is the the pump is extremely sensitive to debris. It is my favorite pump ever used on any mercury of any HP of any year. But it is sensitive to debris. If your orings are splitting or if you got debris into the reservoir then a pump valve might be jammed. It is an easy pump to rebuild. I can do them in about 1/2hour. It is worth noting that the most common source of debris is orings beginning to break down from ATF exposure. If you fix the pump without rebuilding the rams then it will usually just break again within a year. So you should rebuild the trim ram anyway (if you had red colored fluid from factory).

no when it goes up it stays up not a problem it just wont let me raise it going down the lake anymore. unless i am going at slow speeds. when I raise it up in the water and throttle down it drops

Re: tilt and trim

that is a pump problem relating to pressure bypass settings. 1993 should never have that problem. I would not be surprised if it's a 1992 or a 1995 type system. post a picture.
