I'm new to owning an I/O. Put the boat in the water for the first time yesterday and could get the lower unit to trim up and down but would only tilt down. Boat was still in the water when I was trying the tilt. My question is, does the lower unit have to be trimmed all the way up before it will tilt up?

Welcome to IBOATS! But we need to know what you have. Your post is confusing... can get it to trim up and down but only tilts down??? Usually there is a trim up and down switch and a trailer button. Let us know what you have and what, exactly, the problem is.

Re: tilt and trim

305 mercruiser, throttle/ shift lever has two buttons on each side. side closest to driver says tilt, one button for tilt up and one for tilt down. other side is same except it says trim instead of tilt.

Re: tilt and trim

try pressing the top buttons on either side of the shift/throttle lever simultaneously and see if the drive will tilt up all the way

Re: tilt and trim

Welcome to iboats rlskinner66, you really need to post more information on what you have if you want accurate answers. Mercruiser has been using the 305 since 77, and there have been differences in trim systems as well as controls from year to year.
Things like the Merc Serial number is best, as year of your boat may not be the year of the motor. Pictures sometimes help clear things up quickly and accurately, especially when your terminology is different from ours.
