Tilt and Trim Test

I have a tilt and trim unit off a 1987 evinrude 70 hp. The blue and green power wires from the trim motor have been cut from the junction box. Is there a way to still test the motor.

The electric motor is a dual polarity motor, meaning.... hooking a battery to the two wires leading to the motor will cause it to run in one direction... reversing the wires will make it run in the opposite direction.

Bottom line... To test, simply hook a battery up to it.

Thank you. The motor runs, so if I wanted to trim up or down I could just connect the motor to a battery. Is the reason for running the trim through the relays to have control of the motor from the switch?

The reason for the relay setup is to enable the polarity reversal via the PTT toggle switch.

To be connecting a battery to the electric motor on a constant basis is just not practical.

Also, the trim switch in the control box handle won't last long with all that trim motor current going directly through it. The relay system takes the current load of that switch.

Ok, thank you. I also need a new toggle up and down trim switch. Will any three prong switch work because the ones I am finding online are expensive.

Yes.......But the originals are the best. It's up to you as it's your boat.

Just exactly how are you figuring on wiring that unit? The toggle switch isn't going to reverse the polarity when needed.

I plan on running the complete system with the relays. I do have a question about the wiring. The power comes from the battery then goes to the large post on the solenoid. The wiring diagram shows it going from the solenoid, to something, then to the tilt junction box. On the diagram it is a rectangle with two circles on it. Is the the terminal strip? Thank you.
