I just replaced the rod cap and gaskets in the tilt cyl part of my 2000 175 johnson TNT unit . It had a leak around the tilt shaft the trim cyl were ok so I never touch them . I have the unit off the boat and am bench testing it now . The tilt piston is working good and goes up and down but the 2 trim pistons will go out but wont retract on there own when the tilt piston is fully rectracted . does it have air trap or something, does it need the weight of the motor to retract ?

You will need the weight of the motor.

JJB, That tilt piston pulls the motor down to force the trim pistons to retract. On the bench it cannot do this. Your unit is working fine...
