Tilt and trim pump rebuild?

Have a leak on my 1981 175 Johnson trim.
I can't find the leak! I thought it was the lower metal line leaking, replaced it with no luck,(60 bucks for a 3 inch line!)
Can't find any leaks around the pistons or lines but it drips fluid from the bottom of the pump.Just can't locate from where...
I have never rebuilt one of these and was wondering the best way to go.
Do they sell rebuilt units?

Are there any symptoms that the Hydraulics are doing that will help in locating the leak. Example: If it trims out, but no tilt, or you get a loss of oil, that is when you replace the oil lines. If it tilts/trims slowly, loss of oil, TNT leaks down while left standing, these are symptoms of manual release O -ring leaking. Do you have any noticable symptoms?

Actually it works perfect. I did raise the engine and let it set for 2 weeks. It went down maybe a 16th of an inch over that time.
just keep finding drips of fluid hanging from the bottom of the unit.
I'm leaving oil slicks on the water so i got to find it some way.
Found a couple rebuilt ones online for around 600 bucks!!:eek:

Have you had to refill it then?? How low was it? Have you checked the manual release valve to ensure that it is tight? It may also just be worn o rings.

When i bought the boat it was very low.I filled it and fixed a wiring problem to get it working when i brought it home.
Since then i topped it off one time after replacing that bottom line.
It took maybe 2 to 3 ounces then.
I had my neighbor raise and lower it while i watched the unit.Did not see anything. A few minutes later there were the drips hanging on the bottom.

Re: Tilt and trim pump rebuild?

Well then I would troubleshoot these steps in this order:

1. Check tilt cylinder oil lines for leaks
2. Remove manual release valve core and check o ring. It is located on the starboard side just below the resevoir and has a snap ring on it.
3. Check resevoir fill plug O-ring
4. Check pipe plugs for leaks
5. Remove trim cylinder end caps and check o-rings there.

I strongly feel it is one of these 5. Since you have already replaced the lower oil line, it cant be that. Hopefully ur not in for another 60 bucks for the top, but dry and clean it and check it first. Ensure that it is tight. Hope this helps

Re: Tilt and trim pump rebuild?

Found the leak.Line that goes into the top of the center tilt cylinder.
Looks like the assembly will have to all come off the engine bracket to get to it?
Any tips would be great!
