I have been having occasional issues with my tilt and trim. Not working without pushing the switch many times. Usually just the down tilt and trim. Last week the motor would not tilt/trim up without pushing the button several times...it seemed to sputter.

Yesterday when I went to go out the motor lowered to about 90% down and then started to slow down and sputter...then stop at about 95% down. It would not go up or down at this point.

After playing with it for hours it finally went up (sputtering) about 80%. It will not go down or up now...just clicks.

After researching it seems the general opinion would be relays....but both of them???

Any help is greatly appreciated!

My did the same thing. I relieved some of the pressure by turning a plastic covered valve on the tilt unit and haven't had any problems again...yet.

Mine is a screw on the lower left hand side of the TT unit pump.03 F 90.If its sputtering, check for fluid leaking out around the hydrallic piston.A broken O ring will allow air into the system and must be repaced or it will keep giving trouble. There is a procedure for bleeding the air from the TT and adding fluid.check owners manual or buy a Yamaha shop manual. But Im no expert.

Thanks for the extra info about the 0 ring. I've had this same trouble - twice, though mine doesn't sputter as some have said - it just doesn't work and only clicks. my 'bleed screw' is in the same place as mommicked said above, and both times it has gotten my trim up and running perfectly again by bleeding the air. i was already going to try putting fluid in and now i have the o ring idea as well. Thanks!

You did not say, salt water or fresh, makes a big difference. You have a trim switch on your throttle and the side of the motor, Does it do the same with both? You are being given a warning, something is not right. Just replaced my 05-- F115 trim motor do to in being completely inop at times going down or sputtering with no down motion.
Yamaha will sell you a new trim motor for $536 or you can buy the same motor from SIERRA MARINE ON LINE CATALOG for $169.13. P/N 18-6783. BTW, the YAMAHA motor should be 64E-43880-01-00. At that price, the piece of mind is worth it. If yours is a fresh water motor, you have no problem. You will have to remove the pin secured with a cir clip at the top of the ram in order to swing the unit down to get on one bolt.
Different story if you are in salt. Remove the unit by removing the bottom pin and lay the unit on your tail gate. Get a socket and break off 3 of the 4 bolts. The one that does not break is a blind hole in the pump housing. Dont get upset!! it is OK. As you try to remove the remaining studs, they will break off at the pump. Now instead of breaking off bits and easy outs, get a 3/16 or 1/4 in. bit and drill out the studs completely thru. You can then remount the new motor with 1--1/4 in. long bolts with nuts the way YAMAHA should have done it in the first place.
Bleeding can be a drawn out process. You will need a syringe to put ATF in the reseuvoir. Keep cycling the unit until you are satisfied it is full ( big plastic cap. ) with the unit tilted full up. Will recommend one more thing. Try to turn the by pass screw while you can get to it easily. If it refuses to move, use a very wide straight slot bit ( so it does not walk out ) and use increasing stronger blows with an impact wrench. You can also get its attention by hitting the bit with a hammer, it is made of metal as opposed to MERCS which or plastic. I hope you are in fresh water as YAMAHAS love to break bolts in salt. regards FRED
