Ok i'm so lost my motor was working fine i tried to move it today and nothing so i hit the motor with a little hammer and than the engine did move about 1 foot and stopped could this mean the motor went on me i also did test on the wires hooked stright up to a battery and engine did not move so i did a continuity test and my meter beeped i believe thats telling me something is grounded in the trim motor. Now i did make a call to see what motor i would need i have a 200txl77c johnson but the trim looks newer how can i find this info out also, reason why the one suggested is a 3 wire and the one that is on now is a 2 wire thanks all

Have you cleaned, all connections? Is the battery charged up good? I would take all wires off motor, and battery, and clean them real good and try again.

Nothing to clean I cut the wires and tried direct but I'm getting nothing at all could the motor gone bad or a brush grounding out inside?

Re: Tilt and Trim motor

If you hit the mtr with a hammer and it moved, you have a stuck brush in it.

Re: Tilt and Trim motor

Your engine shipped from the factory with a 3-wire trim motor system. Some time in the early 80's OMC went to a 2-wire system. Someone has changed your trim system. Both work equally well. The 2-wire system required a small electrical box with dual relays instead of a single solenoid. In the long run, it's probably more reliable. Many of these boxes on the newer enines mount inside the cowl, bolted to the aft outer exhaust cover. Probably the easiest thing to test on this system is the pair of relays. It's not unusual for one of them to malfunction. The system will may function in the up, or down. You can swap the relays and see if you get any change of movement in the trim motor. From the sounds of your 2nd post, it sounds like you have already wired the motor direct to a battery. If you get no movement when connecting direct- you will probably have to replace the motor.

Re: Tilt and Trim motor

I just took one (2 wire) off my 1991 70 omc last weekend. The trim motor was stuck and wouldn't move when hooked directly to the battery. I pulled engine off the boat, unbolted (4 bolts) the trim assy from the bracket, swung the bracket away and gained access to the previously hidden socket screw (there are 3 socket head screws on this version and it's probably what you have). Once the trim motor was pulled from the mount, I unscrewed the cover and checked the electric motor. Everything looked good but I pulled it out and cleaned it all. It went back together and now works fine. The only trick was having to tie the brushes back so they would let the winding part slide back in. I used string and wrapped it on the brush wires to hold them flush. When the winding is slid deep enough it holds the brushes back and you release the string. This will be easily understood if you take it apart.

I was going to buy a new trim motor at first but found cleaning was all it needed. It was stuck from sitting a couple yrs and the cover had a tiny hole on top that I thought rainwater entered and trashed the electricals. In reality a whack from a hammer may have broke it free but the cover was rusted and I thought it needed replacing anyway. In the end, I ground the paint off the cover and found plenty of metal left. Then plugged the tiny hole and coated the outside with 1:1 epoxy glue to seal it. Not a big deal except for having to pull the engine off the transom...which required disconnecting everything and a friend to help lift it off.

An engine hoist maybe? ;)
Or a chain block if you have an overhead support that is strong enough.

I know that lol do they make something to hold the motor that I can hook it up to when I'm done pulling it off?

Re: Tilt and Trim motor

I built a stand out of 2x8 lumber for larger motors. My 115 & 140 Johnsons came off transoms using a cheap $20 come along and chain up to an oak tree limb. This last engine pull I slid the 70 (while on the transom) away from the steering cable to release it from the tube instead of pulling the cable back under the deck. The cable was threaded though small holes back to the steering quadrant and I couldn't get slack without taking the cable off that end too. Good luck.

Re: Tilt and Trim motor

just a idea but could you just block the trailer and strap the lower to a tree then undo the bolts that connect the trim unit to the transom mounts then gently jack and swing the trim unit out far enoght to get to the motor?. mines smaller and newer and i was doing it that way being lazy and it would have worked perfect had i not snapped a bolt head. 3 beer job turned in to a 12 beer job and i then had to pull the complete motor to get the transom mount side plate off as the bolt snapped leaving 1/2" stud so it wouldnt swing
