Tilt and Trim doesn't work at all!!

Hi, I'm new to the boating world and would appreciate ANY advice on this....

My outboard is a Mariner 60, Manufactured in 1990 with Electric Start, Tilt and Trim etc.
(On a Picton 150 GTS Speedboat).

When trying to raise or lower the OB, the relays happily click away - but there is no movement of the engine.
The first thing I tried was to replace the relays (just in case)...No Joy!
I've seen posts advising to clean the contacts and bullet connectors from the relays to the Tilt and Trim unit, which I have also tried.

Using a pilot lamp I have checked that the power is getting down to the Tilt and Trim unit, which it is - well, as far as the actual unit behind the outboard.

The Tilt and trim unit doesn't look worn, neither does it leak. The oil level is full.
The hydrolic arm seems to raise and lower without a problem in manual mode.

Is it common for the tilt and trim unit to just stop working? Is there something else I could try? Are they expensive to replace? Please tell me theres a fuse somewhere..!!??

Thanks in advance for any advice - I hope the above makes sense!

Hi,

without any specific knowledge about your OB I can suggest a general rule of thumb:

a basic check you can perform is verify whether you have voltage drop in your boat electrical system when you try to lower/raise the unit.

Voltage drop = possibly frozen pump (it has power but does not spin).
No significant voltage drop (please count in the relays) = no power to the pump (the electrical circuit is not closed and the pump is not getting power).

That's one of the first things I check whenever I have a problem like this. It helped with my bilge pump and also macerator.

Hope this helps a bit.
Lou

new_2_boating
First thing you gotta do is determine if its a motor problem or voltage supply problem. There should be 2 wires going to the motor. Check for voltage from one wire to the other when actuating trim. If you have 12 voltage there, and the motor isn't turning, its a motor issue. If you have no voltage there, its a supply issue. Let us know and we'll guide you from there. :)

I've checked the connection to the motor with a 12V lamp, and it lights up no problem when the tilt \ trim button in pressed.
I have placed the lamp on the connector that runs from the relay (which clicks OK) down to the power unit next to the hydrolic arm.

I am going to check the actual voltage through put tonight.

Can the motor be dis-assembled and is there anything that may need to be freed up??
Thanks again.

New2boating
Check your ground on the engine coming from the relay. I have a 1994 force 70hp and that was the problem solver for me. As a side benefit the engine turned over pretty slow before fixing the ground, and now turns over like it's supposed to.

Hope this helps
BigD

Locate the 2 wires that connect to motor, disconnect from relay and jump to 12 volt battery. Motor will run one direction, reverse the wires and jump to battery, motor will reverse. IF you get large spark and motor does not
turn, motor is locked, or shorted, no spark, open circuit. Remove motor clean, recheck.

Clanton - Your a star!
Did what you advised and there was no movement in the motor at all.
On further inspection....I took the motor off the boat and opened it up!! Seized Solid!!

After alot of force and lubricant, connected the motor back up and.....it spun! (well, just).
The motor needs to be replaced, but I haven't got any idea where to purchase one from...anyone know?

I'm going to search the net now,but incase you know my boat is a Picton 150GTS, with a Mariner 60 outboard.

Thanks for all the advice!!!
