Tiller throttle on a sailboat.

I have a '98 Johnson 9.9 HP long shaft on my 23 foot sailboat. My problem is that I need to disconnect the throttle safety spring back device because the tiller location when the motor is in the down position. If I am motoring I need to lean over the stern and have my hand on the tiller to give it gas otherwise it springs back to SLOW. Coming into the dock I need one hand on the motor tiller and the other hand on the boat tiller. What can I do?

Hi Ollie, I know nothing about the late model outboards, but depending on what you want to spend, the engine could be set up with remote controls so it would be very much like having an inboard.. also on many older engines, the tiller/throttle has a friction adjustment that allows it to hold the throttle where ever you set it... don't know if yours has it or not... may try posting in the outboard forum, gets more visitors...................

I have a '82 4.5 evinrude that has a bolt in the trottle linkage in the engine compartment that can be tightened for additional friction to keep the trottle in position. I would be surprised if your motor doesn't have some kind of friction adjustment.<br /> <br />If not how about a piece of velcro wrapped around the twist grip & tiller arm to hold in place. Sew a piece of hook tape to the loop tape & tension as required.<br /> <br />If that doesn't work I bet duct tape would hold it in place. <br /> <br />Hanging over the stern is no fun.
