I need to remove and disassemble the tiller from my '62 Fastwin to clean all the old grease and dirt that is gumming up the gears. Is there a procedure I need to follow to do so? I don't want to just start pulling it apart to find out that I should have done it a certain way.
So far I just removed the long screw on the side by the joint but that didn't seem to do much.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Tiller Removal

Fastwin says it is an 18.

1. Remove the twist grip, and the friction plug and spring inside.

2. Remove the slow-start-fast dial plate, then the two small screws under it.

3. Now the starboard side will come off. Don't lose the brass washer.

4. To remove the port side, first tilt it up, then slide the gear/shaft downward to disengage the gears and make room. Then the half will come off, and the gear cover can be removed. Don't lose the brass washer.

Reassemble in reverse order, lubricating everything well with waterproof marine grease. When you go to put the twist grip on, make sure the screw hole is aligned, and put the screw in a few turns by your fingers before taking a screwdriver to it. It is extremely easy to mis-align and cross-thread the screw, stripping it.

Re: Tiller Removal

Thanks.

If you have ever accessed these diagrams for older motors, you would notice that all the years are noted but many of the diagrams are not there for certain outboards. One would need to look around in both Johnson and Evinrude.

For example, in 1962, there are no diagrams for the 18hp Evinrude model #s. However, there are for the 18hp Johnson, which in most cases, will be just about the same except for cosmetics.
