Greetings everyone:
I need to remove the tiller handle from a '66 Merc 3.9 but the bolts are pretty inaccesible. Do i need to pull the powerhead to gain access? There are 4 bolts going into the engine from the lower cowling, if I remove them what affect will that have on the rest of the engine? The Seloc manual is pretty vague on this. I'm trying to avoid pulling apart the powerhead, replacing gaskets etc. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

It's been awhile but I think you will have to remove the powerhead to get the shift shaft out, then drop the lower unit, remove the 4 covers for the motor mounts and the snap rings, then pull the rubber mounts and the 3 nuts tha hold the handle mount are wide open. Piece of Cake. The bright side is the only gasket involved is the base gasket.

Thanks for the input. Sounds a little more complex than I anticipated, might be best to throw some money at a mechanic and have it done. But I will at least try until I lose my nerve!

What are you trying to accomplish? Trying to replace gears, or replace the handle, or?

I have one apart at the moment, and might be able to advise a technique if I know what you are trying to do.

rascalsdad, it is not a hard job, mostly just nuts and bolts it takes awhile because the upper shift shaft runs down thru the bracket if you look underneath the front of the cowl you can see it and the torque tube and bottom cowl are one piece

Thanks for the help everyone. I broke the tiller handle off in a docking accident and need to pull it off so I can have it welded back together. I don't think they'll be able to weld it without complete access.
