I am trying to torgue the flywheel nut on my 200 Evinrude. Would it be OK to jam a piece of wood between the prop and the cavatation plate with the motor in gear or would I be over stressing the drive train. Tried a strap wrench with no luck.

I have a 200 Johnson 94 model. Any idea what size the flywheel nut is?

That flexible drive shaft won't give a very accurate reading. It is going to twist as you apply torque.

Try a nylon strap ratchet with hooks on both ends. I wrap the nylon strap around the flywheel, attach the hooks on opposite ends of my outboard stand and tighten up the ratchet real good. Should hold the flywheel still while you torque it.

Why wouldn't the strap wrench work? It should. Or if you want to go the fancy right way, they make flywheel holder tools. Car mechanics use them to turn the crankshaft when working on the engine. An auto parts store should have one. Maybe even have one to rent.

Wood shims shop rags vise grips on flywheel wood shim & shop rags on starter gear between vise grips works for me.

You may be able to rent an automotive flywheel holder from a local auto parts store. They are cheap, so I just purchased one.

leisjohn: As far as nut size I don't recall off hand but I had to turn the OD of the socket down on a lathe to get it into the flywheel nut recess. I used an impact socket with an impact wrench to loosen it.

R.Johnson: I didnt know it was flexable but I can see what you mean. Are you talking about 2 pieces where it goes into lower unit gear case?

lindy46: not quite sure I understand what you are doing but thanks for answering.

F_R: I am getting a lot of stretch in my strap wrench and interference with the starter and the timing pointer and timing carb linkage. I will probably end up making the strap wrench work with a little inginuity. Thanks

rainman99: I no alot of people jam the starter and flywheel but I am always afraid I will crack the starter housing. I believe the Torque Spec is somewhere around 145 ft/lbs.

emdsapmgr: Thanks for the tip. The Auto Zone by my house loans tool free with a deposit. I may check with them. I will probably try to make the strap wrench I already have work.

I made a flywheel bar using "flat bar stock." I drilled a large center hole for the flywheel nut could fit through, then 3 holes 120 degrees apart to allow bolts to thread into the "puller bolts" to bolt the bar to bolt to the flywheel. Works like a charm!

Mas:

I like your idea. I think I will do the same thing and I may just mill three slots 120 degrees apart so it will fit other flywheel bolt hole circles. I am a toolmaker and have access to milling machines. Thanks for a great and simple idea. They are the best kind.

Here's the diagram from my Evinrude manual for constructing a flywheel holder ... says it will accommodate up to a 30hp motor ... says to use 1/4" cold rolled steel.
